Spinal Decompression Therapy
Spinal Decompression Therapy is the highly effective, non-surgical treatment of common complaints including lower back pain, sciatica, slipped or herniated discs.
Using a computer-controlled treatment table, gentle traction is applied to the spine to decompress the spine, reduce disc bulges and take pressure off trapped or pinched nerves. The gentle movement also releases restricted joints, restoring normal spinal movement and aiding the healing of the damaged disc.
Unlike other forms of back care there is no manipulation or twisting involved in this treatment, making it suitable for patients that don’t respond well to treatment like chiropractic or physiotherapy. The treatment benches are set up to precisely target the problem area whilst the patient lies on the bench.

What is the typical treatment protocol?
A typical spinal decompression treatment protocol consists of between 10-18 sessions over four to six weeks. Some conditions require fewer visits, some require more. Many patients report relief from their pain and other symptoms during the first few treatment sessions, and most experience dramatic pain relief after completion of their prescribed treatment program.
Why is Spinal Decompression Therapy different from traction, physiotherapy and chiropractic manipulation?
While traction, physiotherapy and manipulation may reduce disc pressures to as low as 40 mm Hg, only spinal decompression has been shown to achieve negative pressures within the spine. It has been clinically proven that spinal decompression creates negative pressures as low as -110 mm Hg3 within the injured disc during the treatment session.
Normally, pulls exerted on the spine trigger sensory receptors in the back to tighten the muscles surrounding the vertebrae and discs in an effort to protect them from injury. Spinal Decompression bypasses this response by slowly pulling on the spine and relaxing the back over an extended period of time, allowing the discs to be re-positioned without tension and without causing spasm and muscle guarding.
Spinal Decompression Therapy can be incredibly successful with more than 10 research articles showing success rates for spinal decompression therapy to be between 80% and 90% for individuals suitable for treatment.
